School Health Nurse

About the Role
  • New opportunity for an experienced Child Health Nurse to deliver care to the people of the Warakurna community across the Ngaanyatjarra lands.The Ngaanyatjarra Lands cover a vast area of approximately 250,000km2 in the east of Western Australia, up to the Northern Territory and South Australian borders. The communities we service are scattered across the Great Victorian and Gibson Deserts.

    The School Health Nurse will provide health education/promotion, health screening, preventative care, and assist the health centre in ensuring clinical management of conditions as appropriate. Practicing within a Population and Primary Health Care framework and philosophy in a remote school setting. In addition you will also provide support to the Child Health Program, within the aims and objectives of NHS and assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of culturally appropriate clinical and health promotion functions across the Ngaanyatjarra region.
Experience & Skills
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working as a primary health care nurse/school nurse/child health nurse in a clinical situation
  • Registration with AHPRA as a registered nurse and in possession of a current practicing certificate
  • Interest in the health issues impacting on Aboriginal people in remote communities in Western Australia
  • Understanding of the principles of Primary Health Care, population health
  • Possess broad nursing experience and utilize clinical skills with confidence
  • Commitment to own professional development and sharing knowledge and skills with work colleagues
  • Possession of PEC, REC and appropriate SA immunisation certificate or eligible to obtain
  • Current Manual WA Drivers Licence
  • Current National Police Clearance and WA Working with Children Clearance or the ability to obtain
  • Ability to travel regional, remote and interstate on unsealed roads by 4WD or by light aircraft.

The Eastern Goldfields is the largest region in Western Australia. It covers almost one third of the State and has a population of about 54,000. More than half of the region’s residents live in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Esperance, on the southern coast, is the second largest centre with a population of around 13,000.

The Kalgoorlie region has been historically significant in the development of Western Australia, as the centre of the gold rush in the 1890s. As well as reminders of those times in the buildings and institutions around the city, there is still a plethora of natural bounty to be enjoyed in its eucalyptus forests, wide sweeping plains and abundance of wildlife. The cultural mix found in the region is also rich, with a melding of Indigenous and European heritages that has created an area of unique character. To the southern edge of the region the pristine beaches provide a stunning backdrop to Australia’s southern ocean, reached through a corridor of National Parks and wide swathes of unspoiled natural beauty.

The primary industries in the cooler southern part of the region are fishing and farming. The warm, dry northern areas are dominated by gold and nickel mining and industry-related services.

About 50 general practitioners work in the region across 22 practices, including Aboriginal Medical Services and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Kalgoorlie is well serviced by specialists.
