Child Health Nurse

About the Role
  • Seeking a experienced Child Health Nurse to work in a community controlled Aboriginal health service providing holistic health care to the Aboriginal communities in Port Hedland, South Hedland and surrounding communities.

    The role of the Registered Nurse - Child Health is to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal people through the provision of culturally sensitive care to babies after 6 weeks of age and children up to the age of 15 years. You will provide and initiate evidence based assessment with additional emphasis on health promotion and wellbeing in the clinic collaborating closely with GPs and visiting specialists on care of clients. You will also provide immunisation services and participate in care planning and infection control management.

    The Child and Maternal service relies on a partnership between WA Health, maternity and community based services and Wirraka Maya. The objective is to ensure healthy children especially ear health and immunizations.
Experience & Skills
  • APHRA registered nurse qualification
  • Child Health qualification
  • Recent experience in midwifery/paediatric or primary health care
  • At least 3 years post graduate relevant clinical experience
  • Immunisation certified
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal communications skills
  • Ability to discuss and explain complex issues to clients and their guardians
  • A demonstrated understanding of the issues and barriers that impact upon the health outcomes of Aboriginal children
  • Current Working with Children check is required
  • All positions also require the possession of a current C class driver's license and National Police Clearance.

The Pilbara is located about 1600 kilometres north of Perth, in the north-west region of Western Australia, with an area of around 500,000 square kilometres and a population of approximately 40,000 people. The primary towns are Karratha and Port Hedland on the coast, and Tom Price and Newman inland.

An area of rugged beauty, the Pilbara has a vast coastal plain, spectacular inland ranges and an arid desert region reaching into the centre of Australia. It is characterised by the rich red hues of its landscape, imparted by the abundance of natural riches in its reserves of iron ore. Mining and offshore oil and gas exploration have given rise to the Pilbara’s economic boom in recent years, drawing large numbers of people to the region on both a temporary and permanent basis.

It has a tropical, semi-desert climate with a mainly summer rainfall associated with thunderstorms. From October to April temperatures throughout the region generally exceed 32 degrees celsius every day, sometimes topping 40 degrees, particularly in inland areas.

There are approximately 46 doctors working in the region in various areas, including general practices, Aboriginal Medical Services, hospitals and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
