Social Worker

About the Role
  • An experienced Social worker required to work in this vibrant Kalgoorlie AMS. The purpose of this position is to provide an ethical, accountable and culturally appropriate social support activities to the ATSI community of the Goldfields Region. This includes therapeutic intervention, community development, professional consultation and community education.

    You will work within a multi-disciplinary and professional team context and provide direction to the Community Engagement Workers and ensure a comprehensive program of activities is maintained and carried out.This includes providing wrap around case management to clients with social and/or emotional wellbeing concerns and provide education and increase awareness sessions to the ATSI community covering issues such as harm minimisation techniques and strategies, risks associated with alcohol and drug misuse. You will also provide community development activities to promote inclusion and participation in healthier lifestyles and participate in regular community engagement activities for individuals and groups to increase community awareness.
Experience & Skills
  • To be considered for this role, you will hold tertiary qualifications in Social Work or related field
  • Demonstrated ability to provide a social work service based on sound knowledge of the psycho/social/emotional health and lifecycle factors impacting upon social and emotional health and wellbeing ie alcohol and drug misuse, loss, family breakdown, family and domestic violence
  • Ability to plan, develop, implement and evaluate individual and group treatment programs
  • Efficient and effective time and caseload management skills
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills
  • A deep and empathetic understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal people and a genuine passion for Aboriginal health and well-being is vital to your success in this role.

The Eastern Goldfields is the largest region in Western Australia. It covers almost one third of the State and has a population of about 54,000. More than half of the region’s residents live in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Esperance, on the southern coast, is the second largest centre with a population of around 13,000.

The Kalgoorlie region has been historically significant in the development of Western Australia, as the centre of the gold rush in the 1890s. As well as reminders of those times in the buildings and institutions around the city, there is still a plethora of natural bounty to be enjoyed in its eucalyptus forests, wide sweeping plains and abundance of wildlife. The cultural mix found in the region is also rich, with a melding of Indigenous and European heritages that has created an area of unique character. To the southern edge of the region the pristine beaches provide a stunning backdrop to Australia’s southern ocean, reached through a corridor of National Parks and wide swathes of unspoiled natural beauty.

The primary industries in the cooler southern part of the region are fishing and farming. The warm, dry northern areas are dominated by gold and nickel mining and industry-related services.

About 50 general practitioners work in the region across 22 practices, including Aboriginal Medical Services and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Kalgoorlie is well serviced by specialists.
