Remote Area Nurse/Midwife

About the Role
  • Current opportunity for a Midwife / Remote Area Nurse to join their friendly, multidisciplinary team in the Kutjungka, WA, on a full-time basis, 6 weeks on, 3 weeks off. Reporting to the Clinic Manager, you’ll be responsible for the coordination and delivery of comprehensive midwifery and primary health care services within the Kutjungka region.This position will also be required to provide emergency care within the Balgo community when necessary, on a rostered on-call basis after hours.

    Some of your key responsibilities will include providing professional, evidence based midwifery and primary health care to individuals, families and the community utilising a holistic and culturally acceptable approach, provide support and enable early access to a midwife and GP for a holistic assessment of their pregnancy, risks and choices and undertake routine womens health checks. You will also be responsible to refer postnatal clients to and collaborate with the Kutjungka Child Health Nurse to ensure a streamlined and integrated health care journey for the mother, child and family and perform Enhanced Aboriginal Child Health checks when Kutjungka Child Health Nurse not available or as required.
Experience & Skills
  • Registered Nurse with APHRA
  • Minimum 5 years post-graduate experience, with experience in the planning, provision, management and evaluation of maternal health services within an Indigenous primary health care setting
  • Demonstrated ability to provide quality healthcare, including emergency care
  • Current manual driver’s licence with the capacity to drive a 4WD

The Kimberley is located in the north-west region of Western Australia. It covers an area of 421,451 square kilometres, an area three times the size of England, but is home to only 35,748 people. A relatively high proportion of the residents are Aboriginal Australians. The population swells seasonally with an influx of tourists and a mobile working population.

The major towns of the Kimberley include Broome and Derby on the west coast, with Kununurra and Wyndham in the east. Within this vast landscape there is a huge diversity of scenery to be explored and adventures to be experienced. Broome enjoys a laid-back tropical ambience whilst the ranges of the East Kimberley showcase the awe-inspiring grandeur and beauty that nature has created. There are approximately 70 general practitioners including GP registrars in the region, nine in private practice, 33 in Aboriginal Medical Services, two in the Royal Flying Doctor Service and 26 hospital based general practitioners.
