Podiatrist

About the Role
  • This opportunity exists for either experienced or graduate practitioner to provide Podiatry services in Karratha and surrounding Pilbara area. The successful applicant will join a team of health professionals based in Karratha. The team includes physiotherapist, dietitian, diabetes educator, psychologist, registered nurse and support staff.

    The role will involve working in the full scope of Podiatry practice where you will be supported. The patient base is diverse and includes diabetic foot screening and education, undertaking preventative, diagnostic, treatment actions and treatment of high risk diabetic feet as well as general Podiatry care. The role includes regular regional visits with the Chronic Disease Team to other towns and communities within the Pilbara. A sound knowledge of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, foot neurovascular screening and Aboriginal health is required.

    When based in Karratha, the position entails a varied scope of practice without the pressure to see a high volume of patients. Work based in Karratha will vary from at risk diabetics to patients seen in typical private setting including paediatrics, biomechanical assessments, orthotic therapy, nail surgery and general Podiatry.
Experience & Skills
  • Essential requirements: recognised qualification within Podiatry profession and AHPRA registration, Professional Indemnity Insurance, Australian Drivers Licence and Police Clearance. The position would suit someone looking to relocate to the area with a sense of adventure. You will need to work collaboratively with the Chronic Disease Team and have well developed communication and organisation skills. The Otureach trips are approx 3 weeks out of every 2 months, so the ability to leave home for this period is a necessity

Pilbara

The Pilbara is located about 1600 kilometres north of Perth, in the north-west region of Western Australia, with an area of around 500,000 square kilometres and a population of approximately 40,000 people. The primary towns are Karratha and Port Hedland on the coast, and Tom Price and Newman inland.

An area of rugged beauty, the Pilbara has a vast coastal plain, spectacular inland ranges and an arid desert region reaching into the centre of Australia. It is characterised by the rich red hues of its landscape, imparted by the abundance of natural riches in its reserves of iron ore. Mining and offshore oil and gas exploration have given rise to the Pilbara’s economic boom in recent years, drawing large numbers of people to the region on both a temporary and permanent basis.

It has a tropical, semi-desert climate with a mainly summer rainfall associated with thunderstorms. From October to April temperatures throughout the region generally exceed 32 degrees celsius every day, sometimes topping 40 degrees, particularly in inland areas.

There are approximately 46 doctors working in the region in various areas, including general practices, Aboriginal Medical Services, hospitals and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
