Dental Hygienist

About the Role
  • Seeking a Dental Care Hygienist to work in a private practice based in Port Hedland. Experience this coastal Pilbara town, 242km from Karratha with spectacular sunsets, wildlife and historical shipping harbour.

    You will be required to assess oral health and advise ways to treat gum diseases such as gingivitis, remove tartar, plague and stains from teeth as well as polish them and educate clinets on the best ways to prevent the build-up of plague and cavities. You will also apply flouride treatments, gum dressings, dental mouth sheets and professional tooth whitening agents and administer and interpret dental X-rays. In addition the role will also require you to use plaster models of the mouth to create customised mouth-guards and whitening trays and sterile and maintain equipment.
Experience & Skills
  • AHPRA registration (no restrictions) and the Right to Live and Work in Australia
  • A minimum of 3 years private hygienist/therapist experience
  • A working with Children card, Police clearance, Hand Hygiene certificate, Current First Aid & evidence of current Hepatitis B status & vaccination are required
  • Highly developed communication skills both verbal and written is expected and experience with D4W is highly desirable. You must be caring, ethical and able to perform all aspects of general hygiene and dental therapy to a high standard
  • Experience with treating children, able to perform adult check ups, taking impressions, periodontal treatment are essential skills. The ability to assess and provide some treatments for Emergency Patients and assist the Principal dentist with the removal and subsequent placement of orthodontic braces is highly desirable. It is essential that you provide patient focused treatment with little or no pain.

The Pilbara is located about 1600 kilometres north of Perth, in the north-west region of Western Australia, with an area of around 500,000 square kilometres and a population of approximately 40,000 people. The primary towns are Karratha and Port Hedland on the coast, and Tom Price and Newman inland.

An area of rugged beauty, the Pilbara has a vast coastal plain, spectacular inland ranges and an arid desert region reaching into the centre of Australia. It is characterised by the rich red hues of its landscape, imparted by the abundance of natural riches in its reserves of iron ore. Mining and offshore oil and gas exploration have given rise to the Pilbara’s economic boom in recent years, drawing large numbers of people to the region on both a temporary and permanent basis.

It has a tropical, semi-desert climate with a mainly summer rainfall associated with thunderstorms. From October to April temperatures throughout the region generally exceed 32 degrees celsius every day, sometimes topping 40 degrees, particularly in inland areas.

There are approximately 46 doctors working in the region in various areas, including general practices, Aboriginal Medical Services, hospitals and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
