General Practitioner

DPA/DWS location - A chance to work in a fast paced, exciting role for an Australian icon has arisen. Come and see the outback with the Royal Flying Doctor Service! Working with a team of supportive staff, this role will combine emergency medicine with rural general practice. 80% retrievals and 20% clinics. A full time retrieval doctor is required for the Royal Flying Doctor Service's Meekatharra base. Working nine shifts per fortnight (day shifts only) this position would suit a career doctor or proceduralist general practitioner with acute care experience. FIFO options for this role are also available. You will also be require to service the outlying clinics in Cue, Yalgoo, Sandstone and Paynes Find. Significant post-graduate experience is required (between five and seven years). Must have significant Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, Anaesthetics (difficult airway management) and Paediatrics experience. Candidates who do not possess all of the above skills are unsuitable for RFDS. Applicants will be involved in providing a range of clinical services including Telemedicine, Aeromedical Retrievals and Flying Medical Clinics. Employment is for a minimum of 12 months but doctors usually stay much longer. A comprehensive formal training program is provided in Perth at commencement. This is a unique opportunity for highly skilled medical practitioners to take a break from the ordinary and experience work as a flying doctor in outback Australia.

The Practice Private, group practice. RFDS base in Meekatharra provides primary healthcare clinics to the surrounding towns of Sandstone, Cue, Yalgoo and Paynes’ Find (does not service Meekatharra)
The Requirements

  • On call: Nine shifts per fortnight, day shifts only
The Package
  • Remuneration: $357,109 per annum plus superannuation. Salary includes on call and professional development allowance. FIFO roles are paid pro rata, based on 0.54 FTE.
  • Accommodation: An air-conditioned home is provided.
  • Vehicle: An air-conditioned, fully maintained and serviced vehicle will be provided, including fuel.
  • Leave: Annual leave of seven or eight weeks annual leave per year, two weeks study leave and additional (unpaid) procedural skills leave.
  • Agreement: Salary packaging available. Sabbatical Leave of five weeks after five years continuous service. Laptop and Smartphone provided.
  • Other details: A Performance Bonus payment of 12 weeks' base salary is payable on the completion of three years remote base service. Also access to funding under Training for Rural & Remote Procedural GP Program and Rural Incentive Payment.

Covering an area of some 470,000 square kilometres, the Midwest region extends from the outback to the ocean. The economic base for the region centres on mining, agriculture, fishing and tourism. Attractions include internationally recognised windsurfing beaches, wildflowers and a rich maritime history of mutiny and shipwrecks.

The region has a population of more than 50,000 people. More than half is based in the City of Geraldton, the region’s commercial, administrative and service centre, around four hours drive north of Perth.

The coastal part of the region enjoys a Mediterranean climate, while the inland experiences warm, dry summers and cool winters.

There are approximately 80 doctors in the region, including private general practitioners, specialists and doctors employed by the hospital and the Aboriginal Medical Service.
