The Rural Practice Pathway incorporates a variety of experiences across general practice, hospital and community settings for those wishing to pursue a medical career in Western Australia.

Student opportunities include scholarships, conferences, rural student health clubs, vocational placements and Rural Clinical School placements. 
Accredited intern, resident medical officer and registrar training positions are available in a range of country hospitals throughout the State.

What are the rural options available as a medical student?
The Rural Clinical School of Western Australia
Helps to deliver better health outcomes for people living in regional, remote and rural areas of the State. Students spend an entire year in a rural or remote centre experiencing a heightened academic and practical course of medicine. Clinical placements occur at local hospitals, general practices, community and remote clinics, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations. There are 14 Rural Clinical Schools throughout Western Australia.

The John Flynn Placement Program 
Provides medical students with a unique opportunity to spend quality time in a rural or remote community under the professional guidance of an experience doctor. Students undertake a total of eight weeks placement over a period of three to four years in an allocated community. Registrations for the program open in January and the application process occurs in April.

Students and Practitioners Interested iN Rural Practice, Health, Education Xetcetera is a dynamic student led rural health club for medical, nursing and dental students. The club provides social support, personal development, team building and the opportunity for members to assist rural communities.

What are my rural options as an intern?
As an intern there are currently two pathways available to work in rural regions of Western Australia. The first pathway requires interns to complete a rural hospital internship and the second pathway requires interns to complete a metropolitan hospital internship with rural rotation/s.

What are my rural options as a Resident Medical Officer?

As a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) there are a number of options for you to work in rural regions of Western Australia. RMOs can be employed by the WA Country Health Service (WACHS) or they can complete rural rotations as secondment through a metropolitan Primary Employing Health Service (PEHS).

WACHS RMO position applications can be made through the Postgraduate Medical Council of Western Australia centralised recruitment process. To learn more about the recruitment process visit the PMCWA website.

What is the Community Residency Program (CRP)?
The Community Residency Program is available to Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) in Western Australia. The CRP is coordinated by the WA Country Health Service (WACHS) and provides RMOs with the opportunity to participate in a short term, well-supervised training placement in a variety of rural settings across Western Australia. During the placement RMOs spend a minimum of 20 per cent of their time in a community setting. Community time could include outreach clinics, outpatient services, specialist community clinics, hospital GP clinics, Aboriginal Medical Services, Royal Flying Doctor Service, Hospital in the Home (HITH) or other unique settings. 

Applications for the CRP are made through the centralised RMO application process.

What is the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program?

The Australian General Practice Training program provides training for registrars towards Fellowship qualifications and gaining specialist (general practitioner) registration. The program is three to four years of full time training offered in urban, regional and rural locations. The Western Australian General Practice Education and Training (WAGPET) is the Regional Training Organisation in Western Australia.
