Buddy Program for Aboriginal Medical Services
![]() |
The Bush Buddy program is an exciting opportunity for unconditionally registered general practitioners to make a positive contribution to Aboriginal health in Western Australia by working for short periods each year as locums in Aboriginal medical Service (AMS) practices. The Bush Buddy program works in cooperation with Aboriginal Medical Services (AMS) in Western Australia with the aim to:
- provide Australian and New Zealand general practitioners with an experience of working in an AMS;
- provide regular leave cover for AMS general practitioners;
- develop an ongoing link between a ‘Buddy’ doctor and the ‘Buddy’ practice including patients, nurses, Aboriginal health and allied health workers; and
- ensure, through training and support, that medical practitioners participating in the Bush Buddy program are suitably trained, experienced, culturally aware and matched with a ‘Buddy’ practice.
Bush Buddy doctors receive where appropriate:
- an Indigenous cultural orientation;
- emergency upskilling if required;
- a base salary of $4,000 per week, paid by the AMS;
- bonus payments of $5,400 for each four weeks of ‘Buddy’ work completed, paid by Rural Health West;
- accommodation and vehicle during the locum placement, provided by the AMS;
- travel subsidies for interstate or international ‘Buddy’ doctors; and
- the cost of travel within Western Australia to and from the AMS, paid by Rural Health West.

Feedback
To assist Rural Health West to monitor the quality of its Locum Program, we ask that both locums and the practices using the booking system complete and return a short questionnaire at the end of each assignment.
Practices are asked to complete the Host Locum Program Evaluation Form and to ensure the locum completes the Locum Program Evaluation Form.
