Assessment
A new national assessment process was implemented on 1 July 2008 in regards to registration requirements for all doctors who wish to work in Australia.
The application category for registration will depend on individual doctor’s qualifications and experience, as well as the type of work wished to be undertaken.
In order to work as a general practitioner (GP) in Western Australia, you must have a minimum of five years Australian equivalent GP experience as assessed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and meet one of the registration pathways.
For more information on requirements for registration via the Competent, Standard or Specialist Pathways category visit the Australian Health Practioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) website.
Where to from here?
All candidates are required to complete Primary Source Verification (Evidence of Qualifications), provide evidence of English Language proficiency and provide evidence of identity. Most will also need to sit a Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interview (PESCI) with the Medical Board.
At this point in time, Rural Health West can only assist with positions for general practitioners and qualified specialists. All other hospital based positions, including training, registrar, resident and consultant positions, must be applied for directly to each West Australian hospital.
A list of the main public and private hospitals and their contacts can be found on the Department of Health website www.health.wa.gov.au. Alternatively, the contact number is + 61 8 9222 4222 and this will connect you to the Recruitment of Overseas Trained Doctors Department.
For a position in a rural hospital, please visit www.wacountry.health.wa.gov.au which will connect you to the West Australian Country Health Service (WACHS). A majority of the rural and remote hospitals in WA are run by WACHS and have a central recruitment team, which you can apply directly to through their website.
