Buddy Program for Aboriginal Medical Services
The Buddy Program is an exciting opportunity for Australian doctors to broaden their horizons by working for short periods each year as locums in Aboriginal Medical Service (AMS) practices and mentoring overseas-trained doctors already working in Aboriginal health.
The program is a joint initiative between Rural Health West and St John of God Health Care in cooperation with regional Aboriginal Medical Services. It aims to build relationships between Australian doctors and AMS practices.
Unconditionally registered metropolitan-based GPs who are committed to making a difference in rural Aboriginal health are invited to participate in the program. Doctors need to be available to work for short periods each year within a specific AMS in the Kimberley or Pilbara, forming an on-going relationship with that organisation in a mentoring capacity.
A half-day cultural orientation would be provided for participants as well as a local orientation plus any medical up-skilling required for the particular service with which they are matched.
A remuneration package incorporating generous bonuses is offered.
Remuneration, bonuses, accommodation and travel
- Contracted payment of $4,000 per week with a bonus of $4,000 payable after three weeks work.
- Accommodation at the assignment is provided by the AMS.
- Costs of travel within WA to locum assignment are fully paid by Rural Health West.
- A $500 travel allowance per trip is available for doctors travelling interstate, to a maximum of $2,000 per 12 month period.
