Working in WA
The vastness of Western Australia, its diverse geography and a shortage of medical practitioners add up to a variety of interesting opportunities for short or longer-term work.
Rural Health West encourages applications from suitably qualified and experienced medical professionals, either Australian or overseas-trained. We will assist you through the approval process to ensure that whether you are working as a permanent doctor, a locum, or on our Five Year Overseas Trained Doctor (OTD) Scheme, your skills and experience are well matched to your practice location.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is regularly offered with reimbursement of associated travel and accommodation costs. We also facilitate the access of rural doctors to a range of courses in various aspects of emergency medicine.
Information and support is available to the partners and families of all rural and remote doctors through the Rural Medical Family Network.
OTDs can expect a comprehensive orientation, covering all aspects of medical practice in rural Western Australia, prior to commencing work in the rural area. If you received your primary medical degree overseas and do not have unconditional registration, click here for further information.
In addition, Rural Health West has developed a publication entitled Surviving and Thriving in Rural and Remote Western Australia, which may assist OTDs and their families new to rural Western Australia.
More information about the options available to doctors who received their primary medical training in Australia or New Zealand or have unconditional registration in Australia is available here.
