Aboriginal Medical Workforce
Working in Aboriginal health is a challenging yet immensely fulfilling role for medical professionals in rural Western Australia. It offers the opportunity to work in a close-knit community environment using clinical skills and practical judgement to improve the lives of patients facing numerous health issues.
Rural Health West is committed to supporting doctors working in Aboriginal Medical Service (AMS) practices or Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS).
A dedicated liaison officer provides a regular point of contact for AMS doctors and also manages the Buddy Program, which recruits doctors interested in providing regular locum and mentoring services to particular AMS’s.
Orientation to Western Australalia through Rural Health West includes a cultural information session. Doctors given placements in AMS practices are also provided with publications on clinical aspects of Indigenous health.
Rural Health West is working in collaboration with the Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia(AHCWA) to establish consistent terms and conditions of employment for all AMS doctors.
An annual dedicated Aboriginal health conference provides a valuable opportunity for AMS doctors to increase their knowledge and skills in this field as well as to network and share ideas with colleagues in similar situations.
