Medical Indemnity Support
The Western Australian Department of Health indemnifies doctors treating public patients in WA's public hospitals from claims against them. Full details of this medical indemnity cover can be found on the Western Australian Department of Health Medical Indemnity website.
As an adjunct to this, Rural Health West administers a Western Australian Department of Health funded reimbursement to resident rural GPs for part of the increased costs of their private obstetrics and procedural indemnity premiums. Specialist obstetricians are also covered.
The GP subsidy enables the reimbursement of any indexed increase over previous financial years, effectively freezing the premiums at the indexed level of the 1995/1996 financial year. The specialist obstetricians’ subsidy freezes payments at the 2000 level.
In order to get the Rural Health West subsidy, eligible doctors need to have applied for and received the Australian Government's Medical Indemnity subsidy (known as the Premium Support Subsidy) and the rural subsidy available from their insurer as the Rural Health West payment is designed to cover the gap. Details of the Australian Government scheme can be found on the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing website.
