MSOAP Training Courses
There are three visiting training programs for doctors and medical professionals working in remote and rural Western Australia, which are implemented and supported through the Medical Specialists Outreach Assistance Program (MSOAP).
1. Emergency Airway Skills and Crisis Management
Specialist anaesthetists and anaesthetic technicians from Royal Perth Hospital provide practical, hands-on and team-oriented training to doctors and hospital staff at 12-13 locations throughout WA through the use of a portable, computerised manikin, the Laerdal Universal Patient Simulator (“SimMan").
The course has been upgraded to include a Paediatric Airway Skills and Crisis Management training module, which is conducted by a paediatric anaesthetist and a paediatric anaesthetic technician from Princess Margaret Hospital.
This successful program was a finalist in the Western Australian 2003 Premier's Award, Services to Regional and Remote Communities category and was a recipient of a Western Australian Department of Health 2005 Patient Safety Award.
2. Advanced Obstetrics Training
Obstetric specialists and Education and Research midwifery staff from King Edward Memorial Hospital provide up-to-date and ongoing team-oriented obstetrics training for doctors and midwives through visits to 10 locations throughout WA.
3. Palliative Care Training
A new Palliative Care training program was introduced in March 2006 for GPs, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals working in palliative care throughout rural Western Australia.
Two training modules developed by the Cancer Council Western Australia are presented in a collaborative team training environment. Modules are tailored to review current practices and guidelines and are designed to foster better communication and understanding between rural health professionals.
The first module of the training program is ‘Palliative Care and Pain Symptom Control’. The focus is on advances in pain management techniques and medications incorporating management strategies for complex pain situations and pain and symptom management for all terminal illnesses (cancer and non-cancer related). This module is presented by a team which includes a specialist in palliative care medicine, a pharmacist specialising in palliative care and a registered palliative care nurse educator.
The second module is ‘Emergency Care and End of Life Issues’ and includes a Psychologist in place of the Pharmacist.
