This broadcast includes a discussion with Associate Professor David Watson, a consultant physician and a past President of MDA National. He holds a position on the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Notre Dame Australia in Fremantle and is Clinical Dean at St John of God Hospital, Subiaco. He has also served as an Australian Medical Association (AMA) Federal Councilor, AMA Western Australia State President and member of the Board of HBF.

Associate Professor Watson will talk us through how to approach and handle a range of medicolegal issues. Topics discussed will include:

  • The importance of documentation
  • What to report to your insurer
  • Avoiding accusations of sexual misconduct
  • Writing medicolegal reports

Recently, the Western Australian parliament passed the Children and Community Services Amendment Act 2008, which requires the mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse. Dr Geraldine Goh discussed the GPs’ responsibilities in relation to this legislation. Dr Goh is a paediatrician at the Child Protection Unit, Princess Margaret Hospital and Child Development Services at West Perth.

On a more clinical note, Dr Stephen Langford and Dr Angela O’Connell from the Royal Flying Doctor Service will talk us through how to prepare a patient for transport with RFDS and will discuss some potential problems that can occur in air transport.

This broadcast has been allocated two CPD points by The RACGP and one CPD point by ACRRM. CPD points are not guaranteed and are subject to review by both agencies.
