In this program we discuss some aspects of mental illness and drug and alcohol use in isolation. We’ll also delve into the assessment, diagnosis and care of patients suffering from both mental illness and drug or alcohol dependence. Joining us to discuss these issues are Dr Moria Sim and Dr Leighton Chadwick.

Dr Sim is a GP and Clinical Associate Professor from the School of Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, University of Western Australia and Dr Chadwick is a Consultant Psychiatrist from Graylands Hospital.

Topics discussed include:

  • Clinical pathways for patients with mental illness and comorbid drug and alcohol dependence
  • The role of the GP in support and management of mental illness and/or drug dependence
  • Prescription drug dependence
  • Managing drug seeking behavior within your practice
  • Avenues for referral

We also spoke to Neonatal Health practitioners from the Women and Newborn Drug and Alcohol Service at King Edward Memorial Hospital and research representatives from the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research about drug and alcohol use in pregnancy and a model of care that incorporates mental health.

Psychiatrist Dr Simon Byrne from Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital, discussed psychiatric emergency and shared some advice about GP and patient safety.
