Whether playing for fitness, pleasure or social reasons, sporting and physical activities are an important part of most Australians lives. When a sports person gets injuries, getting back to do what they love is their number one priority. This broadcast looks at different ways to treat the most common sports injuries GPs will face, and the best and safest management plans to get patients back on track. Dr Ken Maguire joins us to discuss this.

Dr Ken Maguire is a Consultant Physician in Rheumatic Diseases and Sports Medicine. Dr Maguire was the inaugural Medical Co-ordinator of the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra in 1982. He is the Medical Co-ordinator for the Perth Glory soccer team, Medical Advisor for the Fitness Institute of Western Australia and a position on the Medical Advisory Panel for the West Australian Institute of Sport.

Topics discussed will include:

  • Cruciate ligament tears
  • Meniscal tears
  • Cricketer’s injuries
  • Hand and finger fractures and dislocations
  • Ankle injuries

This broadcast also includes sections of a presentation by Dr Gerard Taylor from SportsMed Subiaco at the 2009 Rural Health West Annual Conference.

And we also speak with physiotherapist and former West Coast Eagle John Annear for some more in-depth information on management and rehabilitation of knee and ankle injuries.

This broadcast has been allocated two CPD points by The RACGP and one CPD point by ACRRM. CPD points are not guaranteed and are subject to review by both agencies.
