Supervised Clinical Attachments / Upskilling

In 2004 the Australian Government launched a new initiative as part of the Strengthening Medicare package entitled Training for Rural and Remote Procedural GPs Program.

This program supports procedural GPs in rural and remote areas to attend relevant training which will focus on both skills maintenance and upskilling. The support is provided in the form of grant payments which are designed to assist with the cost of attending training for items such as: Course costs, locum relief and travel expenses.

The program has two components:

  1. Procedural GPs practicing in anaesthetics, obstetrics and surgery in ASGC – RA 1-5 localities – the grant for this component is for up to 10 working days (maximum) of training per calendar year
  2. Procedural GPs practicing emergency medicine in ASGC – RA 2-5 localities – the grant for this component is for up to 3 working days (maximum) per calendar year.
NB: GPs providing services in rural and remote areas but residing primarily in urban areas ASGC – RA 1 localities (eg. Locums, RFDS doctors) may be eligible for the program but are subject to specific eligibility criteria.

The Australian Standard Geographical Classification – Remoteness Area (ASGC- RA) classification coding relates to geographical regions that share common characteristics. To find your ASGC – RA classification click here.

The grant is $2000 per day for eligible GPs registered with either RACGP or ACCRM. For more information and the registration form for RACGP and ACCRM click here.

Eligibility requirements for GPs:

  • Have already attained qualifications in a procedural field and/or
  • Have recognition/credentialling as a procedural GP in a rural hospital and require on-going upskilling to maintain their skill level
