A chance to work in a fast paced, exciting role for an Australian icon has arisen. Come and see the outback with the Royal Flying Doctor Service! Working with a team of supportive staff, this role will combine emergency medicine with rural general practice. A full time retrieval doctor is required for the Royal Flying Doctor Service's Kalgoorlie base. Working five shifts per week (both day and night shifts) this position would suit a career doctor or proceduralist general practitioner with acute care experience. You will also be require to service the outlying clinics in Menzies, Cosmo-Newberry, Transline/Eyre Highway, Eucla, Lake Varley and Tjuntjunjarra. Significant post-graduate experience is required (between five and seven years). Must have significant Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, Anaesthetics (difficult airway management) and Paediatrics experience. Candidates who do not possess all of the above skills are unsuitable for RFDS. Applicants will be involved in providing a range of clinical services including Telemedicine, Aeromedical Retrievals and Flying Medical Clinics. This is a unique opportunity for highly skilled medical practitioners to take a break from the ordinary and experience work as a flying doctor in outback Australia.

The Package
  • Renumeration: $351,831 per annum plus superannuation. Salary includes on call and professional development allowance.
  • Accommodation: An air-conditioned three or four bedroom house will be provided and all utilities are paid by the RFDS.
  • Vehicle: An air-conditioned, fully maintained and serviced vehicle will be provided, including fuel.
  • Leave: Annual leave of seven or eight weeks annual leave per year, two weeks study leave and additional (unpaid) procedural skills leave.
  • Agreement: Salary packaging available. Sabbatical Leave of five weeks after five years continuous service. Laptop and Smartphone provided. Costs provided by RFDS to attend one of the following courses per year - EMST, ETM, APLS or ALSO.
  • Other details: A Performance Bonus payment of 12 weeks' base salary is payable on the completion of three years remote base service. Also access to funding under Training for Rural & Remote Procedural GP Program and Rural Incentive Payment.

The Eastern Goldfields is the largest region in Western Australia. It covers almost one third of the State and has a population of about 54,000. More than half of the region’s residents live in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Esperance, on the southern coast, is the second largest centre with a population of around 13,000.

The Kalgoorlie region has been historically significant in the development of Western Australia, as the centre of the gold rush in the 1890s. As well as reminders of those times in the buildings and institutions around the city, there is still a plethora of natural bounty to be enjoyed in its eucalyptus forests, wide sweeping plains and abundance of wildlife. The cultural mix found in the region is also rich, with a melding of Indigenous and European heritages that has created an area of unique character. To the southern edge of the region the pristine beaches provide a stunning backdrop to Australia’s southern ocean, reached through a corridor of National Parks and wide swathes of unspoiled natural beauty.

The primary industries in the cooler southern part of the region are fishing and farming. The warm, dry northern areas are dominated by gold and nickel mining and industry-related services.

About 50 general practitioners work in the region across 22 practices, including Aboriginal Medical Services and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Kalgoorlie is well serviced by specialists.
