Pilbara - Jigalong

A FIFO opportunity is available to make a difference in remote Aboriginal communities in the Pilbara region. Work in a unique Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service providing culturally appropriate comprehensive primary health care services to the Martu people of Jigalong, Punmu, Parrngurr and Kunawarritji. This position is available to two qualified general practitioners, who will job-share and work part time fly-in fly-out servicing remote Pilbara communities on a roster basis. This roster is negotiable and flexible, with return flights to Perth, accommodation, and a vehicle included, as well as an excellent remuneration package. Based in Jigalong, the successful candidate will spend time in Jigalong, as well as the outlying communities of Punmu, Parrngurr and Kunawarritji

The Practice Private, solo practice. Aboriginal Medical Service providing 24 hour, 7 day a week, medical services to four remote Communities in the Western Desert. Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu and Kunawarritji. Jigalong is a one Doctor, 3 Nurse clinic, whilst the remainder are single nurse stations with assistance from Aboriginal Health Workers. The Doctor rotates through the clinics fortnightly to provide clinical services to the remotest Communities. PAMS also has the services of a visiting Dentist and Child & Maternal Health Nurse. In addition PAMS runs Health Promotion programs which includes a Substance Abuse/Drug & Alcohol, Tobacco and Healthy lifestyle, and Social Emotional Wellbeing programs, Chronic Disease and Care Plan coordination.

  • Renumeration: The remuneration package is $300,000pa or $150,000 @ 0.5 FTE. Limited afterhours required in emergency situations

The Pilbara is located about 1600 kilometres north of Perth, in the north-west region of Western Australia, with an area of around 500,000 square kilometres and a population of approximately 40,000 people. The primary towns are Karratha and Port Hedland on the coast, and Tom Price and Newman inland.

An area of rugged beauty, the Pilbara has a vast coastal plain, spectacular inland ranges and an arid desert region reaching into the centre of Australia. It is characterised by the rich red hues of its landscape, imparted by the abundance of natural riches in its reserves of iron ore. Mining and offshore oil and gas exploration have given rise to the Pilbara’s economic boom in recent years, drawing large numbers of people to the region on both a temporary and permanent basis.

It has a tropical, semi-desert climate with a mainly summer rainfall associated with thunderstorms. From October to April temperatures throughout the region generally exceed 32 degrees celsius every day, sometimes topping 40 degrees, particularly in inland areas.

There are approximately 46 doctors working in the region in various areas, including general practices, Aboriginal Medical Services, hospitals and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
